If you frequently put yourself last on your priority list, you probably need to learn how to nurture and care for yourself more effectively, and you should consider taking some classes in this area. You frequently devote your entire energy and time to your family and your job, so you must learn to nourish yourself so that you can continue to give everything you have to others.

These twenty activities are intended to make you feel good about yourself while also providing you with the energy to get everything done. But, before we get into our list of self-nurturing activities, let’s first discuss why it’s so important to take care of yourself.

Why is it important to take care of oneself?

Despite the popularity of the term “self-care,” many of us women have a habit of putting our own needs second to those of others. Despite this, it is ironic that the more we ignore our needs, the less capable we are of caring for our children, our parents, the organizations we volunteer for, and a variety of other important aspects of life.

For a moment, let us recall the definition of the word “nurture.” Its original meaning was “to feed or nourish,” and I believe that depending on the context, this meaning can be taken literally or figuratively.

You can nurture yourself in a very literal sense through the food you eat, but there are so many other activities you can do to nurture yourself that go far beyond that physical meaning. You can nourish your soul by doing things that make you happy, spending time with people who make you happy, and making sure your body gets enough rest.

If you’re still having trouble wrapping your head around the concept of self-nurturing, consider the following. You’re more likely to lose your cool with your children or miss a critical deadline at work if you’re constantly running on fumes. Both of these outcomes are undesirable for all parties involved.

Self-nurturing can take a long time or a short time, but we all need to do it! Why not consider some of the things you do that you find energizing or encouraging, and make an effort to incorporate some of those things into your life right now?

How to Look After Yourself: The Three Major Categories

You may discover that you are more interested in physically demanding activities from the upcoming list of self-nurturing activities, or you may feel the need to focus more on your mental fortitude. When it comes to all of these aspects of life, the vast majority of us could benefit from increased self-care and self-nurturing.

Movement and exercise-based self-care routines

You might want to consider how you can take care of yourself by nurturing your physical body in one area of your life. Although some of these activities, such as going to the gym regularly and taking naps, may appear trite, you will find that they are extremely beneficial in filling your cup.

Participation in social activities that are self-nourishing

Let us not overlook the importance of tending to our connections with others as we attend to the needs of our physical selves. We are not supposed to exist on our private islands; we need the company of others and the stimulation of our social lives to be content and well-rounded as women.

Activities that promote mental and emotional well-being

When it comes to taking care of ourselves, our thoughts and feelings play an important role. Taking the time to care for your mind, being mindful of the thoughts you allow, and allowing for intellectual development are thus critical components of self-care practices.

Another type of self-nurturing is finding healthy ways to deal with your emotions. It’s normal to have negative emotions from time to time; the important thing is to learn how to deal with them.

When we look at examples of activities, we may discover that some of them provide benefits in the mental, social, and physical realms all at once. Just remember that you deserve to treat yourself by making time for yourself.

Physical activity is a form of self-care

Exercising is the first thing I do when I need to take care of myself, and I know I’m not alone in this regard. It can help you to relax your mind while also benefiting your body. Whatever type of physical activity you choose, getting regular exercise can boost your confidence and give you the feeling that nothing can stop you.

Learn how to make healthy meals

If you believe you could benefit from a nutritional boost, the most obvious place to begin is with your meals. If you want to improve so many aspects of your life, you should try to feed your body nutritious foods rather than those high in sugar or fat. A healthy diet can improve not only your mood and energy levels, but also your strength, skin, and hair.

It should come as no surprise that eating a healthy diet can help prevent major illnesses like heart disease and stroke. By looking for nutritious recipe options online or watching culinary lesson videos, you can nurture yourself to a healthier body, which will affect every aspect of your life.

Don’t be ridiculous

No, I’m not kidding! Why are so many of us always taking ourselves so seriously? Even though we have a lot of important tasks to complete, we need to take a short vacation now and then. According to research, those who enjoy themselves may be better able to deal with stressful situations and find solutions to problems.

Putting in a little effort to make yourself and the people you care about the most laugh may be a very self-caring thing to do. Adults, on the other hand, are perfectly capable of joining in on the silly fun that children enjoy so much. You just have to let loose and do something ridiculous now and then, whether it’s jumping in a mud puddle, having a tickle war, or dancing like nobody’s watching.

Take a break from technology and social media

Even if there are strategies you can use to keep your social media habits from making you unhappy, you would likely benefit from taking a break from itthem. One of the most beneficial things you can do for your self-care is to detox from social media.

Although I enjoy some aspects of my Facebook experience, such as seeing pictures of my friends’ adorable children, the platform frequently causes me to waste a lot of time. Most of the time, it does not make me feel like my needs have been met. Disconnecting from all forms of technology, or at least social media and other sources of lifestyle inspiration, if at all possible, can be extremely beneficial to one’s health.

Spend time with a close friend

One of my favorite ideas is also one of the simplest and most effective ways to take care of yourself! Spend time with a reliable friend. During the pandemic’s most severe stages, many of us realized how critical it is to maintain our friendships and other social connections.

Getting together with a friend can instantly lift your mood, so do everything you can to make plans with them. Put these free and enjoyable activities for friends to the test! Even if we are separated by a great distance, we keepwe must keep in touch with our friends whenever possible. A regular check-in via Zoom to see how each other is doing can help reduce the distance between you.

Reestablish broken bonds in a relationship

This one may appear to be irritating to your ears. It could be that the time has come for you to mend a strained relationship or reconnect with someone you haven’t seen in years. Even if it is natural to grow apart from certain people over time, especially if your priorities change, this does not mean you can no longer be friends with them.

Taking care of yourself isn’t always easy, but repairing a broken relationship may help you release a burden you weren’t even aware you were carrying. Even if you were in error, it is not too late to apologize. If you’re not sure why a friendship ended, perhaps it’s time for you to be the mature one and initiate rekindling it.

(There is one important exception to this rule: if you’ve had to cut a toxic person out of your life, I don’t recommend reuniting with that person.) Trust your instincts in this situation.)

Participate in a group project

Self-care activities can also be done in a group setting. Find a group of people who share one of your primary interests and join it. This could range from pottery to cycling to volunteering to yoga to writing to banjo playing; the options are limitless.

A great advantage of participating in a group activity is that you don’t have to awkwardly try to strike up a conversation with strangers. You have an immediate connection. You may have been in a concentrated period of working more hours, as a result of which you have finally discovered an extra hour or two each week to call your own. Go have some fun and meet some new people by doing something you both enjoy.

Make your wants and needs to be known

I recently listened to a podcasting couple who stated that “ask for what you want” is one of their relationship and marriage’s guiding principles. I’m going to change this to say that you can look after yourself by asking for what you need (or want).

We have a tendencytend to believe that we bear the weight of the entire world on our shoulders. It will not be completed unless we take care of it. However, if you are truly in need, please make an effort to find a friend or family member who can assist you. Request assistance from anyone who can help you, whether it’s your partner, a close friend, or even a coworker. Sometimes all we require is a little help!

You never know; you could be assuming responsibility for transporting all of the children to their karate or music lessons when you are not. Perhaps you and another parent could carpool and take turns driving, or maybe your partner could take over once a week.

Find a guide

Now, let’s talk about yet another type of self-care, which is communicating what you need from others. Do you work as a freelancer and want to start your own business? Do you want to learn from a professional in your field who is a few years older than you? The next step is to look for a mentor or guide.

There is no doubt that you can engage in ongoing networking with a wide range of people through LinkedIn and other platforms. You may, however, be ready to take it a step further and begin having meaningful conversations with a single mentor once a week or once a month. Consider the professionals you know, as well as those whose work you admire.

Your mentor can assist you in coming up with new ideas, solving problems, practicing for difficult professional settings such as job interviews, and much more.

Learn from books, podcasts, and other resources

There is an abundance of educational resources available, the majority of which are free. It won’t be difficult to take care of yourself by improving your mental capacity if you look for books, podcasts, blogs, articles, and speeches. Anything you’re interested in learning more about can be beneficial.

You don’t even have to think of this as a “serious” exploration; you can give yourself the gift of self-care by simply selecting a humorous podcast that puts you in a good mood and allows you to unwind. Self-care can begin with something as simple as reading a fiction book for pleasure for one hour on the weekend. Discover what gives you the most joy.

Take steps to improve your financial situation

Working on improving your financial well-being is one way to take care of yourself, regardless of where you are on your financial journey. If you have a significant amount of debt, you are probably stressed and frustrated; therefore, taking action to get out of debt will be a great step in the right direction.

You might want to learn how to budget more wisely or increase your contributions to your 401(k) or IRA. Putting money aside for an exciting trip may be one of your current priorities. All of these activities are considered acts of self-nurturing because they benefit you.

Maintain a gratitude journal

Surprise, I’m a big fan of gratitude! Keeping a gratitude diary is a great way to incorporate appreciation into your routine because having a grateful attitude has many positive effects on our lives.

Putting your gratitude in writing may help you become more aware of the good things in your life. You might not be known for your ability to keep a journal, but you might come across a new type of thankfulness challenge that will bring you joy.

Experiment with new things

The unfamiliar can frighten us, but it can also amaze us. Allowing yourself to have new experiences gives you the opportunityallows you to discover new things that you might enjoy. You may dislike it, but you will eventually overcome a phobia.

Recognizing that you are human and that you do not need to know how to do everything is an important part of self-nurturing. Another thing to remember is that you don’t have to be an expert in everything right away. What you do today can have a big impact on your financial situation tomorrow, so why not use this opportunity to learn how to start investing as a beginner?

Consider axe throwing, teaching, kayaking, learning a new language or instrument, sketching, changing your car’s oil, or any of the other potential hobbies listed here. New tasks, whether enjoyable or unpleasant, put our abilities to the test and demonstrate what we are capable of.

Engage in kind and caring self-talk

Our internal monologues have an impact on how we go about our days. If you notice that you are frequently thinking (or saying) negative things to yourself, try to have compassion for yourself.

Have a conversation with yourself in the same way that you would with a close friend. You would rather offer encouragement and support than harsh criticism. You might want to try some of these activities to boost your self-confidence so that you can shower yourself with more love and care.

Meditate

Some people find the concept of meditation intimidating because we are so accustomed to living in a state of constant activity and conversation. It is not always easy to find a quiet place to sit and contemplate one’s thoughts.

Because my goal is simply to be present in each moment of my life, I sometimes refer to this practice as “mindfulness” rather than “meditation.” Rather than focusing on the past or the future, someone who practices mindfulness can devote their full attention to the present moment.

Assist those in need

Doing something nice for someone else can increase your happiness. This may seem counterintuitive to the idea of self-care, but helping others can indeed make you happier. According to a growing body of academic research, kinder people have higher levels of overall happiness.

Taking care of yourself can be as simple as bringing a coworker a cup of coffee or lunch. It is not necessary to put in a certain number of hours or to commit to a volunteer position on a consistent basisconsistently. Simply being loving and kind to the people in your life can assist you in tending to your own emotional needs.

Cozy up to a furry companion

Do you want to hear me out on this? Almost definitely not. If you have a pet, you probably enjoy nothing more than cuddling with that animal. Cuddling with your pet for an extended period can be a very effective type of treatment. If you have a cat or a dog, this could be very helpful. Fish, on the other hand, do not meet the requirements.

Because of her unconditional love, our puppy always makes us feel like the luckiest people on the planet. If you don’t have a pet, you might be able to reap some of the same benefits by paying a visit to a friend who does and spending some time petting their dog.

You are free to act in any way you see fit

Okay, since this is the final suggestion on the list, how about we have some fun with it? Because you get to choose what constitutes self-care activities, you should choose activities that you enjoy doing. This may change from one day to the next. Simply put, you should pay attention to your thoughts and follow your instincts.

By listening to what you want to do, you will eventually be able to teach yourself how to take care of yourself. Relax, enjoy yourself, listen to some music, take a walk in the woods, and watch The Office for the tenth time. Do whatever makes you happy, and don’t let guilt prevent you from taking time off for yourself when you need it!

Allow yourself some downtime to unwind and recharge!

A person who is well-rounded and happy values the time they spend nurturing themselves. Don’t forget about yourself, even if you won’t be able to engage in self-nurturing activities as frequently or for as long as you’d like. You are an amazing lady, and you have the right to investigate the things that make you happy and complete.
